Just remember to bring water shoes if you plan on swimming at the beach. I stepped on a sea urchin there once.
You'll also need suntan lotion, because an hour out in the sun here is like 20-30 minutes there, though now that the seasons are changing it might be a LITTLE better.
I can't tell you about safety there, I was there over 12 years ago, however I can tell you that fresh sugar cane, mangos and what they call Limoncillo (aka Mimoncillo) should not be missed.

Thanks!!! How does it compare to... say Cancun? If you have ever been?

I've only ever been to D.R. and that was with friends who owned a house there (and could translate for me).
I did enjoy the Teleferico (sky car) in or near Puerta Plata.
Bring money, there is a gift shop at the top, and they charge tourists more (not much more) than residents to ride, but the view is amazing!

i've been to both
punta cana had absolutely gorgeous beaches and seemed to be geared towards families
puerta plata wasn't nearly as pretty (the sand was dark and hard) but it was more of a hot spot of single party animals and less couples/families
